SABEN specifically procures high capacity access networks connecting TVETs to South Africa’s National Research and Education Network (SA NREN). The non-profit company works directly with the South African National Research and Education Network (SANReN) and the Tertiary Education and Research Network of South Africa (TENET) to provide high capacity bandwidth for TVET colleges.

In addition, SABEN offers other digital solutions such as hosting, VOIP and WiFi  services.

SABEN was initially launched in 2015 as a project by TENET to assist colleges self-fund connections to the SA NREN. It has since been launched as a separate company.

SABEN forms a part of the South Africa’s NREN by serving as the sole provider of NREN services to public Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges in South Africa. It started as a collaboration between the Tertiary Education and Research Network of South Africa (TENET) and South African National Research and Education Network (SANReN). Its purpose is to solve bandwidth poverty at South Africa’s TVET colleges, thereby enabling them to contribute meaningfully to meeting the goals of the developmental state, by working with TVET colleges to procure self-funded connections to the SA NREN. SABEN was initially launched in 2015 as a project by TENET to assist colleges self-fund connections to the SA NREN. It has since been launched as a separate company, with continued financial support from TENET.

National Research and Education Network (NREN) is a specialised internet service provider dedicated to supporting the needs of the research and education communities within a country. NRENs operate in every corner of the globe. It is usually distinguished by support for a high-speed network, often offering dedicated channels for individual research projects and school and university internet connectivity.

The roles and responsibilities of the de facto South African NREN (SA NREN) are distributed between the South African National Research Network (SANReN) Competency Area (CA) at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the Tertiary Education and Research Network of South Africa (TENET).

The SANReN CA and TENET co-operate closely in building and supporting the South African NREN as a research, education and innovation platform for the benefit of its customers and users, and for the realisation of associated national development objectives. SABEN collaborates with TENET and SANReN to connect colleges to the SA NREN.

We Can't Help Everyone, but Everyone can help someone

We support the post schools education and training (PSET) system in South Africa.

The following publications describe the overall context within which we operate. First is the White Paper for Post-School Education and Training outline’s our Developmental State’s strategy to improve the post schools education sector. We are focused on resolving the ICT and digital requirements of that sector. The second publication is “A Skills beyond School Review of South Africa” which outlines the need for developing the skills sector. Again, our role is supporting the digital requirements for doing so.
